SULZER HIP REPLACEMENT
The Sulzer hip replacement, manufactured by Sulzer Orthopedics, is an artificial joint used to replace the natural hip in patients whose hips could no longer function normally.
SULZER HIP REPLACEMENT RECALL
In December 2000, Sulzer Orthopedics recalled approximately 40,000 hip replacements due to defective manufacturing. The defective hip replacements were contaminated with an oil residue used in the manufacturing process. The residue inhibited the bonding of the hip replacements to bone and, as a result, many patients experienced intense pain and had difficulties walking. Sulzer Orthopedics was also forced to recall its knee replacement device for a similar reason.
SULZER HIP REPLACEMENT RECALL LAWSUITS
Since the Sulzer hip and knee recall, approximately 1,200 lawsuits have been filed against Sulzer Orthopedics. In an effort to settle these lawsuits quickly, a class action settlement exceeding $1 billion has been offered to victims of the recalled hip and knee replacement.
