About Xarelto®
In 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Xarelto® as a preventative treatment for blood clots in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery. It was also approved for patients suffering from atrial fibrillation (heart arrhythmia), and prescribed to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and stroke.
Xarelto® was marketed to doctors as a good alternative to Warfarin, a similar medication in use since 1954 that requires regular blood tests for users. Warfarin is linked to an increased risk of bleeding, but this side effect can be successfully treated with high doses of vitamin K. The manufacturers and marketers of Xarelto® touted the new drug’s superiority, claiming it eliminated the requirement for routine blood tests for patients.
However, internal and uncontrollable bleeding events occurred for many patients on Xarelto®. In these cases, vitamin K did not work as an antidote, and patients died or were seriously harmed by uncontrollable bleeding. Three times as many patients have died from Xarelto® complications as compared to deaths from Warfarin or other similar medications.
In addition, though Xarelto® was prescribed to prevent blood clots, a number of patients have experienced clotting events. Other reported complications include increased infections after surgery, cerebral hemorrhage, hematoma, swelling of lower limbs, and breathing difficulties.
Xarelto® Lawsuits
Across the country, attorneys have filed personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits against Janssen Pharmaceutical (a division of Johnson & Johnson), the manufacturer of Xarelto®, and Bayer Healthcare, the company that markets the drug. On behalf of hundreds of plaintiffs, the suits allege that these companies failed to sufficiently warn doctors and patients about the dangers of this medication, including the fact that there is no antidote.
Had adequate warnings been provided, patients and their physicians may have chosen a different medication or used regular blood testing to decrease risk of a bleeding event. Now, the risks are considered high enough that Xarelto® has landed on the top of the list of high-alert, or dangerous, anticoagulant medications from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP).
